Sudan’s Ministry of Education has revealed that UNESCO has secured more than $250 million to support the reconstruction and development of education in the country.
Ahmed Khalifa Omar, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education, stated that in addition to mobilizing this funding, UNESCO is working to hold an international partners’ conference in Paris on May 26 to rally further support for the sector.
Speaking during a workshop on developing the implementation plans for the transitional education plan, held in cooperation with UNESCO, Omar emphasized the importance of the event. He explained that the workshop discusses an ambitious plan that involved all Sudanese states, was deliberated at multiple levels, and presented during the coordination forum of state Ministers of Education. The workshop serves as a smaller forum to finalize the execution plans that will be implemented by the state education ministries.
He noted that after presenting the plan to an international expert, it will be distributed to the local education group, a key partner in the development of the transitional plan under the umbrella of UNESCO.
Omar highlighted that the plan focuses on four main areas: teacher training, capacity building for educational staff, improving the school environment, and ensuring continuous learning under all circumstances.
He urged state ministries of education and planning departments to highlight the destruction caused by the war, identify how to address and rehabilitate the school environment, and work towards the continuity of education to reflect the resilience and determination of the Sudanese people to carry on with life.
