Thirst Destroys Crops and Inflicts Heavy Losses on Farmers in Northern State

Follow-ups – Mashawir

Farmers in Northern State have reported the burning and destruction of hundreds of agricultural projects, warning that the situation signals an impending disaster that threatens food security in the region. They emphasized that many citizens depend on farming as their primary livelihood.

The agricultural projects are suffering from severe drought due to the collapse of irrigation services for more than three months, caused by continuous power outages resulting from repeated attacks on the Merowe Dam by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Farmers reported that up to 40% of the wheat cultivation area in Northern State has been damaged, as crops have not been irrigated due to the ongoing electricity cuts.

Electricity in Northern State has been cut off since April 8, following drone strikes by RSF forces on the Merowe Dam power station — the country’s largest energy source.
