The General Coordination for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Refugees in Darfur has warned of a “silent famine” caused by a worsening humanitarian crisis and the lack of basic services in the Tawila area of North Darfur, amid official neglect and a deadlock in relief efforts.
A statement by spokesperson Adam Regal indicated that conditions for displaced people in Tawila are rapidly deteriorating toward severe hunger, with a lack of clean water and a collapse of the health infrastructure.
Tawila has become the largest refuge for hundreds of thousands of displaced people who fled the Abu Shouk and Zamzam camps following the latest Rapid Support Forces (RSF) incursion on April 10.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health under the RSF-controlled civil administration in South Darfur has reported 65 cases of cholera, including four deaths and 49 recoveries.
