Measles Outbreak in Darfur Poses Grave Threat to Displaced Children

Mashaweer – Reports

Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) has launched a mass vaccination campaign to combat a measles outbreak among children in the Darfur region.

In a post on platform X, the organization stated that the campaign aims to vaccinate over 183,000 children across three out of five states in Darfur.

The first phase of the campaign began last Friday in Forbaranga, West Darfur, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health. So far, 30,000 children have been vaccinated in the area, along with more than 5,000 others in Sortoni IDP camp in North Darfur and the Jebel Marra region in Central Darfur.

The outbreak has also been reported in the Tawila area, which hosts hundreds of thousands of displaced people fleeing from Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps and the city of El Fasher in North Darfur. Tawila has become a critical hub for humanitarian operations.

On May 24, health authorities in Forbaranga reported that at least 750 children had contracted measles, with 14 deaths confirmed.

The health situation in Darfur has severely deteriorated. Much of the region is under the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and the collapse of security, shortages of supplies, and the bombing of several facilities have worsened conditions.

According to the United Nations, Darfur is facing a horrific humanitarian crisis, with 79% of the population in urgent need of humanitarian aid and protection.
