The government of Khartoum State has documented 117 new mass graves so far across the three cities of the capital—Khartoum, Omdurman, and Bahri—as existing cemeteries have reached and exceeded their capacity.
A government official from Khartoum State noted that the ongoing war has necessitated the creation of new burial sites. Dozens of bodies have been buried in homes and streets without being identified or officially recorded.
Earlier this year, authorities began exhuming graves in some streets and homes in Omdurman in preparation for transferring the remains to official cemeteries.
The same official explained that among the bodies recovered from these newly established graves in public areas and streets were soldiers from both sides of the conflict. These remains have since been reburied in recognized cemeteries.
