Siege of North Darfur Deepens Living Crisis and Threatens Famine

Mashawir – Reports

The Governor of North Darfur State, Hafiz Bakhit, stated that the siege imposed on the state capital is a major factor behind the skyrocketing prices. He also blamed widespread brokerage activities and the greed of traders hoarding goods, which has significantly worsened the crisis.

He noted that the state government had previously formed a security mechanism to regulate the markets and curb harmful commercial practices, including usury and monopolistic behavior.

Bakhit gave traders who are stockpiling goods with the intent of inflating prices a 72-hour ultimatum to lower their prices. Otherwise, the government would seize the goods and distribute them to citizens free of charge.

He also urged residents not to respond to calls to leave the city of El Fasher.
