The Chadian government has warned that it may be forced to close its land border with Sudan due to insufficient international support in handling the consequences of the mass displacement. Officials emphasized that such a decision would have severe humanitarian repercussions for Sudanese refugees.
Chad’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs urged the international community to urgently step up its assistance to the country in order to prevent the closure of its borders.
Approximately one million Sudanese have sought refuge in eastern Chad over the past two years of continuous war in Sudan, and thousands more continue to cross the border in search of safety.
