Cholera Ravages Nuba Mountains Amid Severe Medicine Shortages

Follow-up – Mashaweer

The civil authority in areas controlled by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement–North (SPLM-N) led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu in the Nuba Mountains has announced that the number of cholera cases has risen to 460 by the end of June.

According to a statement by the Cholera Epidemic Control Committee in South Kordofan, infections have been concentrated in the Heiban and Umm Dorein counties. The “Kudi B” camp recorded the highest number of cases with 162, followed by Kudi with 45, Kauda with 28, and Amkor with 20 cases. Other areas reported between one and two cases each.

The committee attributed the spread of the epidemic and the resulting fatalities to the lack of vaccines and medicines, delayed access to hospitals due to long distances and lack of transportation, as well as poor health awareness.

Earlier, the First Secretary of the civil authority in SPLM-N-controlled areas had issued a statement confirming the outbreak of cholera in South Kordofan, noting at the time 131 confirmed cases and 10 deaths, and announced the formation of a high-level committee to confront the epidemic in the region.
