Armed Movement Arrests Journalists in North Darfur

Monitoring – Mashawir

A force affiliated with the Sudan Liberation Movement–Transitional Council, led by Sovereign Council member Salah Rasas, has arrested two journalists in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, and transferred them to one of its facilities.

The joint forces and military intelligence personnel are accused of restricting journalists and preventing them from carrying out their work freely, prompting many journalists to leave the city.

According to sources in El Fasher, a military intelligence unit under the Transitional Council arrested journalists Mohamed Ahmed Nizar and Nasr Yaqoub from Nyafasha Market in Abu Shouk Camp, north of El Fasher.

The arrests came just one day after journalist Nasr Yaqoub was shot by an officer affiliated with the Transitional Council at a Starlink satellite internet center he operates. The incident occurred after Yaqoub refused to shut down the center and hand over the operating device without official procedure.

In response to the shooting, a military spokesperson for the Transitional Council accused journalist Nasr Yaqoub of violating security and military directives in the Abu Shouk Camp and refusing to comply with restrictions imposed on satellite internet centers.
