The United Nations has expressed deep concern over reports of brutal attacks on villages in Kordofan, amid escalating clashes in the region that are severely impacting humanitarian operations.
The UN warned that the rainy season is expected to further complicate the situation by destroying shelters and disrupting food supplies.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Sudan (OCHA), the attacks targeted villages in the Bara area of North Kordofan State between July 10 and 13.
These attacks resulted in the deaths of at least 300 people, including children and pregnant women, with many more injured. Homes were looted and burned, and a mass displacement of civilians ensued.
OCHA also highlighted renewed shelling in El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, amid growing fears and insecurity among civilians. Additionally, more than 20 people were reported killed in attacks on the towns of Al-Fula and Abu Zabad in West Kordofan during the same period, including victims of an airstrike that hit a shelter housing displaced families.
The UN office pointed to the continued displacement of people fleeing from El Fasher and North Kordofan in search of safety, with Northern State receiving thousands of internally displaced persons from North Darfur since June. OCHA once again urged the international community to provide urgent support to reach millions of people in need across Sudan.
