The General Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugee Camps described the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Darfur, particularly in the camps, as extremely critical, with hunger and severe malnutrition taking a daily toll on children, pregnant women, and nursing mothers.
A statement from the Coordination noted that Darfur is witnessing a widespread outbreak of cholera, especially in the Kalma displacement camp and the Tawila area, the largest displacement hub since the current war.
The statement added that the epidemic now poses a threat to hundreds of thousands of displaced persons fleeing violence in El Fasher and the Zamzam, Abu Shouk, and Abuja camps.
The Coordination pointed out that IDPs face harsh and horrific living conditions, along with a severe shortage of humanitarian services, including drinking water and sanitation, which facilitates the spread of disease.
The statement continued: “Despite the significant efforts of international humanitarian organizations, civil society groups, emergency response rooms, and local authorities, the crisis has surpassed their capacity and is no longer sufficient to meet urgent needs.”
It further explained that ongoing fighting in El Fasher continues to force more residents to flee to the Tawila area. The statement urged the international community to shoulder its moral responsibility in line with international law and put an end to this mounting crisis.
