Health Ministry Appeals for Support to Contain Cholera Outbreak in South Darfur

Follow-ups – Mashawir

The General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees revealed a significant surge in new cholera infections across the Darfur region, with 90 cases reported daily, more than one-third of them among children under the age of five.

The Ministry of Health in South Darfur State announced 57 new cases of the disease, including six deaths — the highest daily toll since the first case was detected on May 27.

The ministry urged relevant agencies to provide support to contain the outbreak by assisting rapid response teams, supplying essential medicines, strengthening drinking water sterilization systems, improving environmental health conditions, and raising public health awareness among local communities.

According to the epidemiological report from the General Directorate of Emergency Health and Epidemic Control in the state, the cumulative number of cases since the outbreak began has reached 610, including 46 deaths.

Large parts of Darfur are grappling with a rapidly spreading cholera outbreak amid dire humanitarian conditions, which are hampering containment efforts and worsening the suffering of residents and hundreds of thousands of displaced people facing acute shortages of food, medicine, and clean drinking water.
