The number of deaths from the cholera outbreak in Tawila, about 60 km west of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, is rising daily, and the toll is expected to jump further with the ongoing rains.
According to residents of the area, there is an alarming increase in cholera cases in Tawila, especially in the new Diba Naiera camp, despite efforts by health organizations operating in the region.
On Friday alone, 11 deaths were recorded, not including unregistered cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases so far to 1,543, with total deaths reaching 26.
Doctors in the town attribute the uncontrolled spread of the epidemic to poor sanitation and the fragility of the healthcare system, compounded by overcrowding in the camps, particularly in the southern sector.
