The Civil Administration of the Liberated Territories in areas controlled by the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) led by Abdelwahid al-Nur in North Darfur has declared the region a humanitarian disaster zone.
A humanitarian appeal has been launched to the international community and its institutions for immediate intervention to save the lives of more than 7 million people living in dire humanitarian conditions.
The areas under Abdelwahid’s control have seen massive influxes of displaced people from various cities and regions of Sudan, resulting in harsh humanitarian conditions due to the difficulty of providing essential services needed to save lives, as cholera spreads uncontrollably in displacement camps.
For years, Abdelwahid’s movement has controlled the Tawila area in North Darfur, the southwestern part of Jebel Marra (the movement’s main stronghold), and several villages across North, South, and Central Darfur.
The movement does not consider itself a party to the ongoing war, stressing its commitment to full neutrality.
Mujib al-Rahman Mohamed al-Zubair, head of the Civil Administration in these areas, explained that the movement has made several similar appeals, but the response has not exceeded 35% of the aid required by the displaced people.
