The specter of famine hangs over the displacement camps and residential neighborhoods in the city of El Fasher, as food supplies have run out and the few items available in local shops are being sold at exorbitant prices.
The cholera outbreak is spreading rapidly in most of the displacement camps—most notably Tawila, Kalma, Otash, and Al-Salam—amid severe contamination of drinking water and a complete lack of sanitation.
The General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees warned that the humanitarian situation in Darfur in general, and El Fasher in particular, has reached a state of total collapse, and that with each passing day, more lives are being lost.
An urgent statement from the Coordination read:
“People are eating ambaz (animal feed), sesame and peanut husks, and other oilseed by-products just to stay alive—many can’t even find that. They are not waiting for food; they are waiting for death. Women, children, and the elderly are the most affected.”
