The United Nations has reiterated its concern over the rising toll of hunger, disease, and displacement across conflict-torn areas of Sudan, amid unprecedented heatwaves and anticipated floods threatening the lives of thousands. So far, only 23 percent of the humanitarian response plan for the current year has been funded.
Heavy rains in North Kordofan State last Monday displaced around 550 people and destroyed over 170 homes in the Al-Rahad area. In eastern Sudan, floods submerged a displacement camp in Kassala State, affecting more than 6,000 people.
UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq stated that community kitchens in El Fasher have shut down due to food shortages, forcing some residents to consume animal fodder. He added that people are dying of hunger and malnutrition in the city, while more than 7,000 displaced persons in Lagawa camp, East Darfur, are facing acute food shortages.
Haq also noted that although humanitarian partners have scaled up their cholera response and expanded treatment capacities in Tawila, North Darfur, urgent needs remain, and medical supplies are running dangerously low.
