UN Security Council Discusses Developments in Sudan

Follow-ups – Mashawir

The United Nations Security Council is set to discuss the ongoing situation in Sudan during its session today (Monday) in New York, including the worsening humanitarian crisis in El Fasher.

Between 2024 and 2025, the Security Council adopted four resolutions related to Sudan, including a call for a ceasefire between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in March 2025.

In June 2024, the Council also passed a resolution to lift the siege on El Fasher and allow humanitarian aid to reach civilians. However, the resolution has yet to be implemented, with Sudan’s Foreign Ministry accusing the RSF of ignoring the Security Council’s decisions.

A proposed humanitarian truce in El Fasher, introduced by the United Nations in late June, failed to move forward due to what were described as difficult conditions imposed by the RSF.

According to volunteers working in communal kitchens and humanitarian centers, the population in El Fasher—under siege since April 2024—is facing conditions approaching famine.
