A human rights group reported on Monday that Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) killed at least 14 civilians as they attempted to flee a besieged area in Darfur, more than 27 months into the ongoing conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese army.
The Emergency Lawyers Association, which documents war atrocities, stated that “dozens were wounded and an unknown number of civilians were arrested” during an RSF attack the day before yesterday on the village of Qarni, located northwest of the besieged city of El Fasher in West Darfur.
Meanwhile, the RSF confirmed on Sunday that it had advanced militarily toward the city of El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State, through multiple fronts and had taken control of several adjacent areas.
However, military sources indicated that the Sudanese army halted the RSF’s advance and inflicted a major defeat on its western front, causing significant losses in personnel and destroying several combat vehicles.
In a statement, the RSF said its recent operations were part of broader strategic goals in its war against the army, ongoing for over 27 months.
The statement urged residents of El Obeid to remain indoors and avoid areas where army forces or their allies are present, stressing that the RSF is committed to international humanitarian law and does not target any segment of the local population.
