The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that “families trapped inside the city of El Fasher are facing the threat of famine due to the closure of all routes leading into the city as a result of the siege, cutting it off completely from humanitarian aid.”
In a statement, the program acknowledged that it has been unable to deliver food aid by road to the city for over a year. It continues to provide digital cash assistance to around 250,000 people inside El Fasher, but noted that this support falls far short of meeting the vast needs of the besieged population.
WFP’s Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa, Michael Dunford, stated:
“Everyone in El Fasher is struggling daily just to survive.”
He stressed that “with all coping mechanisms exhausted, many lives will be lost without immediate and sustained humanitarian access.”
