Edem Wosornu, Director of Operations at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), stressed the need for a sufficient truce to enable UN teams to respond to the dire situation in the city.
The UN official noted that El Fasher is completely besieged, and the organization is awaiting approval from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to deliver humanitarian aid to the trapped population.
She added that the UN has received guarantees from the Sudanese army but is still waiting for a similar response from the RSF.
A UN assessment published on July 8 revealed that 38% of children under the age of five in displacement sites in El Fasher suffer from acute malnutrition, including 11% who are severely acutely malnourished.
El Fasher, besieged by the RSF since May 2024, is the only remaining Darfur capital still under army control. The RSF has deployed hundreds of fighters along the roads leading to the historic Darfur capital to block the entry of goods, relief, and medicines into the city.
