The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has confirmed the outbreak of deadly cholera in a refugee camp in eastern Chad hosting Sudanese arrivals from Darfur, raising concerns over deteriorating health conditions as humanitarian aid runs out.
In a statement, UNHCR said that as of early August, 264 cholera cases and 12 deaths had been reported in the Dougui refugee camp and surrounding villages. Suspected cases have also emerged in the Trigouine camp, which also hosts Sudanese refugees.
The agency noted that border sites, which host one-third of newly arrived refugees, are at high risk of disease transmission as more people continue to arrive from Darfur.
In Adré, the largest informal site hosting more than 235,000 people, three suspected cases are currently under investigation, raising fears of wider spread.
