Emergency Lawyers: Security Cell in Khartoum Serves as a Tool for Repression and Intimidation of Civilians

Mashawir – Reports

The “Emergency Lawyers” group has accused the security cell in the capital, Khartoum, of functioning as a key instrument for repressing, intimidating, and liquidating civilians in favor of the army.

In a statement, the group highlighted the growing dangers posed by the cell’s violations, which include detaining citizens in its well-known offices across the capital and subjecting them to systematic torture and ill-treatment.

The statement continued: “In some cases, the cell transfers detainees to larger prisons such as Jebel Sirkab, where they face multiple fates under inhumane conditions, or refers them to police stations to fabricate charges against them, while others are released in deteriorated physical and psychological conditions.”

The group further noted that some detainees are later found dead, either executed or as a result of torture, while the cell also exerts pressure on victims’ families—sometimes threatening them with death or arrest.

The group confirmed it has documented hundreds of cases of arbitrary detention and dozens of missing persons, whose fate remains deliberately concealed by the authorities. It held the security cell, the judiciary, and the army responsible for these practices, calling for the immediate release of detainees and disclosure of the fate of the missing.
