The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) described the war in Sudan as “the deadliest for humanitarian workers worldwide,” reporting that more than 120 aid workers have been killed since the conflict began in April 2023.
Marking World Humanitarian Day, OCHA issued a heartfelt appeal to end attacks on aid workers and warned against cutting off the “lifelines for Sudanese people.” The agency also called on the international community to urgently provide funding for the humanitarian response plan.
In a press briefing, Resident Humanitarian Coordinator Luca Renda described the Sudan crisis as one of the most severe humanitarian emergencies in the world. He noted that millions are suffering from acute food insecurity and have been forced to flee their homes due to fighting, while aid workers—who continue their lifesaving efforts with courage—face risks of violence, threats, and restrictions that hamper their work.
