The seasonal Gash River has surrounded villages in Kassala State, while authorities in Sudan’s Northern State have warned of high Nile water levels expected to persist until October.
In a press statement on Sunday, the army announced that its air force had carried out evacuation operations for residents of villages trapped by the Gash River floods in Kassala State, following directives from Army Commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
Army helicopters also delivered food aid to residents of Tandlay village in Kassala after the Gash River completely cut off the area since the day before yesterday.
The seasonal Gash River has been recording rising flood levels since last week, posing a threat to Kassala city and surrounding rural areas.
Meanwhile, authorities in Merowe locality, Northern State, issued warnings urging citizens to take maximum precautionary measures against significantly high Nile water levels north of the Merowe Dam to protect lives and property.
Officials also cautioned residents living downstream of the Merowe Dam, along both banks of the Nile, in low-lying areas, river islands, and those operating irrigation pumps, agricultural projects, river transport vessels, and Nile water stations, that the sharp rise in water levels is expected to continue until the end of October.
