Alarming Surge in Cholera Deaths and Infections in Darfur

Reports – Mashawir

Sudan’s Darfur states are witnessing the worst cholera outbreak in years, with 615 deaths reported and around 12,000 infections since the disease began spreading across four of the region’s five states.

The disease continues to spread daily amid a devastating war that has destroyed the healthcare system and led to severe shortages of food and clean drinking water.

In its latest report, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) stated that the cholera outbreak in Darfur is the most severe Sudan has faced in a long time.

The organization explained that mass displacement caused by the war has deprived people of access to clean water and basic preventive measures, while delivering humanitarian aid has become nearly impossible.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) has issued warnings about the disease, which can be fatal within hours if patients do not receive timely treatment. According to the UN health agency, cholera is treatable with the provision of oral and intravenous fluids as well as antibiotics.
