International Organization for Migration: Khartoum Witnesses Steady Increase in Returnees

Reports – Mashawir

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) stated that Khartoum is witnessing a steady increase in the number of returnees to the state. A report by the organization projected that the number of people returning to the capital will reach 2.1 million this year, compared to around 5 million who were displaced from the city during the peak of the fighting.

The organization noted that the returns are not limited to the capital alone. Between November 2024 and June 2025, nearly 2 million people returned across 1,611 locations in the states of Al-Jazirah, Khartoum, Sennar, Blue Nile, White Nile, River Nile, and West Darfur, with three out of every four returnees coming from sites within Sudan.

The war, ongoing for two and a half years between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese army, has led the United Nations to describe the situation as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with famine expanding across Sudan to include El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State.

According to UN estimates, nearly half a million people have fled El Fasher since fighting erupted there in May 2024, while 270,000 remain in the city.
