War Drives Inflation Higher in Sudan

The Central Bureau of Statistics indicated that Sudan’s inflation rate rose in August to 81 percent, compared to 78.39 percent in the previous month.

According to the bureau’s statement:

Urban areas recorded an inflation rate of 83.93 percent in August, up from 80.20 percent in July.

Rural areas recorded 83.51 percent in August, compared to 77.53 percent the month before.

The statement added that Sudanese households spend 52.89 percent of their income on food and beverages, 14.17 percent on housing, water, electricity, gas, and fuel, and 8.34 percent on transport.

Inflation also increased across categories such as recreation and culture, transport, restaurants, and hotels, while other categories recorded declines.

Regionally, inflation rose in 7 out of 18 states in August:

Gezira: up by 36.22%

South Kordofan: up by 29.90%

North Darfur: up by 28.30%

Khartoum: up by 22.29%

East Darfur: up by 18.92%

Red Sea State: up by 2.26%

Meanwhile, other states saw a decrease in inflation, the sharpest being in Sennar (-120.47%), followed by West Darfur (-18.98%), and East Darfur (-18.45%), with smaller drops in the remaining states.
