United Nations warns of increasing use of drones and attacks on civilian facilities

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, warned of the growing use of drones, particularly in attacks on civilian facilities, which has affected “areas that were previously relatively untouched by the conflict in northern and eastern Sudan.”

The Commission noted that the warring parties have continued launching attacks in densely populated areas using artillery shelling, airstrikes, and drones, carrying out assaults that caused mass casualties and injuries, mostly in Darfur, Kordofan, and Khartoum.

A report by the High Commissioner covering the first half of this year condemned the increasingly ethnic nature of Sudan’s war, stressing that impunity fuels cycles of violations and abuses while atrocities are being committed amid the catastrophic situation.

Türk expressed concern over the intensifying conflict in Sudan and the sharp rise in civilian deaths, alongside the escalation of ethnic dimensions and the worsening humanitarian crisis—warning of grave risks to long-term stability and social cohesion.
