The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, urged Sudanese stakeholders to play a constructive role in ending the conflict in the country.

He called for the establishment of a civilian-led transitional government in Sudan and affirmed, during a joint briefing with U.S. State Department Senior Advisor for African Affairs, Massad Boulos, at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, that the AU continues to engage Sudanese stakeholders to reach a ceasefire and support a Sudanese-led dialogue to help end the war, organize elections, and enable civilians to govern the country.

Youssouf reiterated the AU’s strong commitment to supporting African solutions to the continent’s challenges.

In a joint press statement, both Youssouf and Boulos reaffirmed the United States’ and the African Union’s commitment to strengthening their partnership across various fields with the aim of building a stable and prosperous Africa.

The U.S. advisor explained that the roadmap recently adopted by the Quartet group of countries to end the war in Sudan includes a clear timeline.

He emphasized that the time has come for more than 10 million displaced Sudanese to return to their homes, stressing that the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan and the death of tens of thousands—especially children—due to hunger require urgent action from the international community.
