Regional Arrangements Underway for Consultations Among Sudanese Political Forces

Reports – Mashawir

The African Union plans to hold consultations among Sudanese political forces from October 6 to 10, with the aim of fostering unity among Sudanese, preparing the ground for an inclusive Sudanese–Sudanese dialogue, and paving the way for a political transition to a constitutional, civilian-led system.

The consultations will involve participation from the United Nations, the European Union, the Arab League, and IGAD, alongside Sudanese civil groups, including the “Samood,” “Ta’sis,” and the Democratic Bloc alliances, in addition to several political parties such as the Communist Party, the Baath Party, the Democratic Unionist Party (Original), and other civil forces and groups.

Earlier, on September 12, the Quartet mechanism—comprising the United States, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates—proposed an initiative to end the conflict in Sudan. The plan is based on a three-month humanitarian truce, followed by a ceasefire, and then the launch of a political process leading to civilian rule.

Meanwhile, U.S. Presidential Advisor Masad Boulos held talks with the African Union in recent days aimed at involving it in the Quartet’s efforts. The mechanism is expected to convene during the upcoming participation of the four countries’ foreign ministers at the United Nations General Assembly.
