The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Sudan has warned of the risk of Kordofan states sliding into a humanitarian catastrophe as hostilities escalate.
In a statement, OCHA said: “Kordofan is gradually sliding toward a humanitarian disaster with the intensification of fighting, tightening blockades, and civilians enduring conditions resembling a full siege.”
The office noted that the UN is verifying reports of civilian casualties resulting from airstrikes and ground attacks, while schools and health facilities are increasingly becoming targets.
It further explained that access to food, medicine, and essential supplies remains extremely limited in Kadugli and Dilling, despite new waves of displaced people arriving in both towns.
According to OCHA, the fighting in South Kordofan during the rainy season has disrupted farming and livestock movement, leading to the destruction of livelihoods and the collapse of food security.
