Escalation of fighting in Kordofan threatens farming and livestock activities

Mashaweer – Reports

Community leaders have revealed that ongoing clashes in North and West Kordofan have triggered mass displacement, emptying many villages of their residents and causing a sharp decline in farming and herding activities in one of Sudan’s most productive regions for gum arabic and peanuts.

Thousands of rural residents have been forced, for the first time in their lives, to abandon agriculture and livestock herding and flee to towns. This threatens Sudan’s traditional farming season, in addition to the loss of livestock, as repeated looting has targeted hundreds of sheep and goats.

Many herders have also been killed while resisting thieves and armed groups during seasonal grazing movements.

More than 80 percent of village residents rely on farming and livestock to meet their basic needs.
