Health Conditions Deteriorate in Kadugli as Cholera Claims Lives

Follow-ups – Mashawir

Health conditions have sharply deteriorated in Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan State, due to the spread of diseases. More than 500 people have died from cholera, with most fatalities recorded in Kadugli locality and the eastern countryside, according to medical sources.

The sources noted that in recent weeks the city has witnessed an alarming increase in daily deaths, ranging between 10 and 15 per day, amid a near-total shortage of essential medicines—particularly intravenous fluids, which are available only in private pharmacies at exorbitant prices, reaching 50,000 Sudanese pounds (USD 14) per bottle.

They added that government hospitals in the city are almost devoid of the most basic medical services, lacking medicines, laboratory supplies, and even anesthetics—further worsening the suffering of women during childbirth.

According to the same sources, medical services are available only in private clinics at high costs unaffordable to most residents, where the highest current salary ranges between 150,000 SDG (USD 42) and 200,000 SDG (USD 56).

The sources further warned that Kadugli’s health situation is likely to deteriorate further, as residents suffer from weakened immunity due to hunger, malnutrition, and dehydration. Malaria is spreading with no treatment available, while antibiotics and fever reducers are in severe shortage—placing the city in the grip of a combined health and humanitarian crisis that threatens the lives of thousands of its inhabitants.
