UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has strongly condemned the continued killing and injuring of civilians in El Fasher, following reports that at least 53 civilians were killed and more than 60 others wounded by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) between October 5 and 8.
In a statement, Türk said, “I am appalled by the RSF’s deliberate and unrestricted disregard for civilian lives, despite repeated calls—including my own—to ensure their protection. They have continued to kill, displace, and attack civilian targets, including displacement shelters, hospitals, and mosques, in total defiance of international law.”
Türk urged the RSF and all parties to the conflict to draw lessons from the International Criminal Court’s conviction of Ali Kushayb for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Darfur.
The High Commissioner also called on UN member states with direct influence to take urgent measures to protect civilians and prevent further atrocities in El Fasher and across Darfur.
