The Italian news outlet Interris conducted an interview with Chiara Zacconi, Head of Mission for the COOPI – Cooperazione Internazionale organization in Sudan, in which she discussed the depth of the crisis affecting millions of Sudanese amid the ongoing civil war that has ravaged the country since April 2023.

Zacconi stated that Sudan has been experiencing a highly dangerous conflict for more than two and a half years, resulting in one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, as recognized by the United Nations.

She explained that the situation on the ground is worsening daily, with around 14 million Sudanese displaced in search of safety—10 million internally displaced and about 4 million who have fled to neighboring countries such as Chad, Egypt, and South Sudan.

According to Zacconi, over 24 million people in Sudan are facing an extreme food crisis, while the most affected groups are women and children, who struggle to access food and healthcare and are often the first victims of widespread diseases.
