Local sources have reported that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) executed at least 47 unarmed civilians during violent attacks and systematic torture in the city of Bara, located in North Kordofan State. The RSF also forcibly disappeared more than 50 other people, amid open threats of reprisals against residents for celebrating the army’s brief control of the city in September.
In a statement, the Emergency Lawyers Group accused the RSF of committing horrific massacres against civilians in Bara following its takeover after fierce clashes with the Sudanese army.
Eyewitnesses who fled the city said RSF fighters executed groups of young men in the streets, pulling others from their homes and shooting them on sight. Among the victims were university students who had returned to Bara to check on their families’ homes after the army had recaptured the city in September.
The Sudanese Congress Party in North Kordofan condemned the massacre against unarmed civilians in Bara following the army’s withdrawal from the city last Saturday.
In a statement, the party said the RSF launched a wide-scale attack directly targeting civilians, carrying out mass executions of dozens of people, most of them young men. It added that the RSF conducted mass arrests, looting, and large-scale destruction, while cutting off all communication and internet networks in an apparent attempt to conceal the crimes and violations.
The party called for urgent international intervention to halt the massacres, protect civilians, and open a transparent international investigation to ensure accountability for those responsible for these atrocities.
The RSF took control of Bara on October 25, after the Sudanese army had previously regained it on September 11 following intense fighting.
