Horn of Africa Women’s Network: 40 Women Raped in North Kordofan

Mashawir – Reports

A women’s rights organization has reported that 40 women in the city of Bara, North Kordofan, were subjected to individual and gang rape at gunpoint inside their homes by members of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), after family members were separated and threatened.

The RSF launched retaliatory attacks after taking control of Bara for the second time on October 26. Earlier this week, the army carried out a military operation in North Kordofan, regaining control of Kazgeil and Um Dam Hajj locality, and advancing toward the outskirts of Bara and Um Si’ala before withdrawing from both areas following intense battles.

The Horn of Africa Women’s Network “Saihah” stated in a press release that 10 cases have been verified so far, including two minors aged between 15 and 17. All victims have been moved to safe locations where they received medical care, as well as psychological and social support.

The statement condemned the violations committed by the RSF, describing them as war crimes and crimes against humanity under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and the 1949 Geneva Conventions. It also noted that these acts constitute a violation of the UN Convention Against Torture, which Sudan has ratified.

The network called on the international community to provide urgent protection and support for women, children, and displaced persons, and urged African Union and United Nations mechanisms to intensify documentation efforts in Bara and other areas of North Kordofan.
