Antonio Guterres Calls for Renewed Global Commitment to Prevent the Use of Chemical Weapons

Reports – Mashawir

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a renewed global commitment to preventing the use of chemical weapons, in a message marking the Day of Remembrance for All Victims of Chemical Warfare.

Guterres noted, in a statement shared on UN platforms, that this year coincides with the 100th anniversary of the 1925 Geneva Protocol, which banned the use of such weapons following the horrific consequences witnessed during World War I.

He highlighted the progress made with the entry into force of the Chemical Weapons Convention and the expansion of its membership to become nearly universal. “However, the work is not yet complete,” he warned, citing the continued use of chemical weapons and emerging threats linked to scientific and technological developments that could make their production and use easier.
