Worsening Humanitarian Situation in South Kordofan Amid Escalating Fighting

Mashawir – Reports

South Kordofan State—particularly the besieged cities of Dilling and Kadugli—is experiencing dire humanitarian conditions due to ongoing and repeated military operations, which have intensified mass displacement in recent days as residents flee toward safer towns and villages.

For more than a week, military confrontations have steadily escalated between the Sudanese army on one side and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their ally, the Sudan People’s Movement (SPLM-N), on the other. The escalation follows joint attacks by the latter two groups on the army’s Kertala garrison in the area, aimed at blocking the army’s efforts to break the siege on Kadugli and Dilling.

Two days ago, army forces and allied groups regained control of the towns of Al-Damra and Tabassa, west of the city of Al-Abbasiya—the largest city in South Kordofan—from SPLM-N forces after heavy fighting.

Last February, the SPLM-N, led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu, announced its alliance with the RSF by joining the “Founding Sudan Alliance” (Tassis), launched in the Kenyan capital Nairobi. Their forces have since been operating under the joint name “Tassis Forces” when carrying out coordinated military operations.
