WHO Calls for Immediate End to Targeting of Healthcare Facilities in Sudan
Mashawir – Reports
The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has renewed his call for an immediate halt to attacks on healthcare facilities in Sudan, noting that such assaults continue to deprive the population of essential services.
In a post on the X platform, Ghebreyesus confirmed that 198 attacks on health service facilities have been documented since fighting erupted between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April 2023. These attacks have resulted in the deaths of 1,735 healthcare workers and patients, and the injury of 438 others.
He also referred to reports that the hospital in the city of Al-Nahud in West Kordofan State has been converted into a military barracks by the RSF, and that Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has withdrawn its staff from the Zalingei hospital in Central Darfur following the killing of one of its health workers.
Ghebreyesus stressed that attacks on healthcare facilities constitute violations of international humanitarian law and must stop, calling on all conflicting parties to ensure the protection of medical facilities, patients, and health workers.
