United Nations: The Disaster of El Fasher Must Not Be Allowed to Repeat in Kordofan
Mashawir – Reports
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk on Thursday called on the warring parties in Sudan to immediately halt fighting in the southern regions, expressing deep concern over the prospect of a new wave of atrocities following the massacres in El Fasher.
In a statement, Türk said, “We cannot remain silent in the face of this new catastrophe.” He added, “These battles must stop immediately, and essential aid must reach those threatened by hunger.”
Clashes have intensified this week in the oil-rich Kordofan region in southern Sudan, where the army is attempting to repel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) assaults on a strategic corridor linking Darfur to the capital, Khartoum.
“It is truly shocking to see history repeating itself in Kordofan so soon after the horrific events that took place in El Fasher,” Türk said. “We must not allow a recurrence of what happened in El Fasher,” where RSF forces committed brutal acts after seizing control of the city in late October.
Türk also accused all parties to the conflict of obstructing humanitarian access.
