Worsening Living Conditions in Khartoum as Communal Kitchens and Humanitarian Aid Come to a Halt

Mashawir – Reports

Humanitarian conditions for residents trapped in southern Khartoum have severely deteriorated due to an escalating food crisis.

Activists reported that all communal kitchens and World Food Programme (WFP) assistance to residents of the South Belt area of the capital have come to a complete stop.

In a statement, the South Belt Emergency Room said it “regrets to announce the suspension of all aid services supporting residents of the South Belt, including all communal ‘takkayas’ in the Al-Azhari sector, as well as the halt of humanitarian assistance previously provided by the World Food Programme.”

The committee noted that this development has deepened residents’ suffering amid shrinking job opportunities and declining household income.

A field assessment released by the Norwegian Church Aid organization and the International Medical Corps indicated that 97% of households in Khartoum are experiencing food insecurity, forcing them to adopt negative coping mechanisms, including skipping meals, child labor, and begging.
