Washington: Military Leaders in Sudan Should Seek Peace, Not Prolong the Conflict

Follow-ups – Mashawir

The United States said on Tuesday that it is concerned about calls by the Sudanese army leadership for a military resolution to the conflict and the imposition of preconditions for any ceasefire.

Tommy Pigott, Deputy Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, said on the platform X that “tens of millions of Sudanese are suffering as a result of the continued conflict.”

He stressed that military leaders in Sudan should pursue a path that leads to peace, rather than continuing the conflict.

Pigott added that achieving a durable and stable peace requires negotiated arrangements that would bring an immediate end to violence, facilitate sustained humanitarian access, and pave the way toward a permanent ceasefire and the launch of an inclusive civilian dialogue.

The Sudanese government has presented a roadmap to end the ongoing conflict, which includes the withdrawal of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) from cities, their disarmament, the regrouping of their forces in designated camps in South and East Darfur in preparation for integration, and accountability for those who committed crimes. This would be followed by a comprehensive dialogue among political forces to reach consensus on the future of governance.
