“Sumoud” Alliance: Statements by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission Show Bias Toward the Port Sudan Authority

Monitoring – Mashawir

The Civil Democratic Alliance of the Forces of the Revolution “Sumoud” criticized statements by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, in which he praised what he described as the vision of the Port Sudan authority.
The alliance considered these statements to represent a clear bias toward one of the parties to the fighting in Sudan and a departure from the African Union’s decisions and principles that call for rejecting military solutions and prioritizing peaceful pathways to end conflicts.
In a statement issued today (Wednesday), the alliance said that what was stated by the Chairperson of the Commission was not merely passing praise, but rather a distortion of facts and a characterization of an initiative “for what it is not.”
It noted that the statements ignored the Quartet Roadmap previously endorsed by the African Union, including the proposal for an unconditional three-month humanitarian truce, paving the way for a credible, civilian-led political process to end the war and achieve stability and lasting peace.
The statement explained that the Chairperson’s praise coincided with remarks by Sudanese Army Commander General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in Turkey, in which he emphasized the likelihood of a military solution and reneged on previous commitments to the Quartet Roadmap—a position that the U.S. State Department said obstructs peace efforts.
The alliance added that the stance of the African Union Commission Chairperson contradicted international positions pressing for an end to the war, and considered it tantamount to endorsing a plan to prolong the conflict put forward by the Port Sudan authority.
“Sumoud” affirmed its rejection of what it described as attempts to provide political support to the Port Sudan authority “by any means and at any cost,” at the expense of the African Union’s history and positions. It called on African countries to reject the use of the continental organization to serve agendas that do not reflect the spirit and principles of the Union.
The alliance warned that the Chairperson’s positions undermine the African Union’s required neutrality to play a mediating role among Sudanese parties, describing this as regrettable and in need of redress. It stressed that Sudan needs concerted efforts to achieve an immediate and just peace—not positions that fuel the war and prolong its duration.
