Volker Türk Calls for Accountability for Perpetrators of Crimes in Sudan

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, warned today (Sunday) of the increasing “militarization of society” by both parties to the conflict in Sudan.
He expressed concern over the possibility of the El Fasher scenario being repeated in the cities of Kordofan, while Sudanese citizens live in “horrors and hell.”
In a press conference in Port Sudan following a visit to several Sudanese cities, his first since the war began Türk stated: “The proliferation of advanced military equipment, particularly drones, has enhanced the military capabilities of both the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Army. This has prolonged the hostilities and deepened the crisis for civilians.”
Türk expressed grave concern regarding the rising pace of societal militarization, including the arming of civilians and the recruitment and use of child soldiers.
He noted that during his visit to displacement camps in northern Sudan, he heard accounts of widespread summary executions carried out by the RSF in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur. These were reportedly motivated by revenge or suspicion of affiliation with the Army and its allies in the “Joint Force.”
Concluding his four-day visit, Türk spoke at the Port Sudan airport: “I have met those most affected by the brutal violence and injustice of this war.”
He added: “The horrific experiences of these survivors must drive action to end this conflict and prevent this tragedy from ever happening again.”
