United Nations: 4 Million Children and Women in Sudan Face Acute Malnutrition
Follow-ups - Mashaweer
The Nutrition Cluster has projected that 4.2 million children and pregnant or breastfeeding women will suffer from acute malnutrition this year an increase of 12.4% compared to 2025.
In a recent report, the group stated: “In 2026, it is estimated that 8.4 million people are in need of nutritional assistance. This includes 5 million children under the age of five and 3.4 million pregnant and breastfeeding women.”
The report clarified that out of the total number of people needing assistance, 4.2 million are expected to suffer from acute malnutrition. This is a 12.4% rise from the 3.7 million reported the previous year. Furthermore, it is anticipated that 824,000 children under five will suffer from Severe Acute Malnutrition, also known as “severe wasting.”
The report also highlighted the widespread prevalence of nutrient deficiencies:
48% of children under five suffer from iron-deficiency anemia.
Minimum dietary diversity remains critically low.
Recent surveys indicate a further deterioration of the nutritional situation. Of the 61 surveys conducted, 31 reported a Global Acute Malnutrition rate of 15% or higher, surpassing the emergency threshold set by the World Health Organization (WHO).
