British Foreign Secretary Expresses Concern Over Deteriorating Situation in Sudan
Khartoum - Mashaweer
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, and British Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, have expressed their concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan.
Youssouf and Cooper called for a cessation of hostilities in Sudan and the achievement of a ceasefire and a humanitarian truce.
The war in Sudan broke out in April 2023 between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the “Rapid Support Forces” (RSF), leaving thousands of civilians dead and millions displaced.
International, regional, and local powers have proposed several initiatives to stop the fighting and prevent it from escalating into an all-out civil war. Most notable among these are the Saudi-American initiative (known as the Jeddah Platform), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) initiative, the Manama Document, and the “Neighboring Countries” initiative—which includes Egypt, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Chad, Libya, the Central African Republic, and Eritrea—alongside various other efforts.
