Japan Grant to Support Wheat Cultivation in Sudan

Atbara - Mashaweer

The Acting Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of Japan in Sudan, Takanobu Nakahara, has announced a new grant of $3 million to support a new wheat project in River Nile State. This is part of a package of 19 projects aimed at enhancing food security in the country.

During a meeting with Sudanese Finance Minister Gibril Ibrahim, Nakahara explained that the grant will be implemented through coordination between the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This collaboration aims to ensure the project’s goals are met and its benefits are expanded.

This step comes within the framework of Japan’s support for Sudan’s efforts to face economic and humanitarian challenges, especially under the current circumstances in the country, where food security represents one of the top priorities for both the government and the international community.

The “Gezira” agricultural project is located in the central region between the Blue and White Niles; it is considered one of the largest agricultural projects in the world, covering an area of 2.2 million acres.
