UNHCR: Most Sudanese returning from neighboring countries report protection risks

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) stated today (Tuesday) that most of the 721,000 Sudanese nationals returning from neighboring countries have reported protection risks.

In a report, the UNHCR noted that 65% of Sudanese returnees reported protection risks in neighboring countries. Meanwhile, 55% mentioned they had submitted asylum applications in the countries they departed from, and 26% stated they had left family members behind.

The report indicated that 721,000 Sudanese have returned from neighboring countries since July 2024.

The report also highlighted that the return of Sudanese nationals has increased gradually since February 2024, with between 20,000 and 80,000 people returning to their home country every month.
