“Sumoud” Alliance Welcomes Continued Suspension of Sudan’s Membership in the African Union
Addis Ababa - Mashaweer
The Civil Democratic Alliance of Revolutionary Forces “Sumoud”, led by former Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, reported that the African Union Peace and Security Council has rejected, by a broad consensus, a proposal to lift the suspension of Sudan’s membership in the African Union.
In a statement published on its official Facebook page, the “Sumoud” Alliance welcomed the African leaders’ refusal to backtrack on the AU’s decision to suspend Sudan’s membership following the military coup in October 2021.
The alliance noted that the African statement reaffirmed that there is no military solution to the conflict in Sudan, urging the warring parties to commit to an immediate humanitarian truce across the entire country.
At the same time, it called for the necessity of reaching a consensual political solution that is Sudanese-led and Sudanese-owned, coordinated through international initiatives, most notably the Quad mechanism and the efforts of the Quintet mechanism.
The “Sumoud” Alliance emphasized the importance of the African Union maintaining its neutrality and avoiding the adoption of any unilateral initiatives that could prolong the conflict and increase internal polarization.
The anti-war alliance reaffirmed its readiness to engage with all African and international efforts to bring peace to Sudan, stop the bloodshed, address the humanitarian crisis, and protect civilians.
